When Lane Woroschuk sat for a job interview this month, his first after months of searching, he never mentioned his disability. But he has supports, provided through the Weyburn Group Homes Society. On the week before his first day of work, his support worker got in touch with Cowtown.
The owner of the Cowtown franchise in Weyburn, Ken Paslawski, confirmed a conversation with the worker took place. The reaction appeared to be positive, according to Tamara. But days later, on the morning after his second shift, Lane was fired. And I was so proud of him. She said she has contacted the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission about the matter, and is preparing to file a formal complaint.
He said he believed the group home was a foster home. He told the Leader-Post he fired Lane for a simple reason. Tamara finds that frustrating, since the group home could have offered supports to help Lane adapt to his new job.
She said they were rebuffed. Paslawski blames the group home staff for the confusion. He said he never refused the supports provided by Weyburn Group Homes Society.
He told his support worker. He said he was afraid that Lane would get angry and cause a disturbance in the store. It left him feeling much like he has through much of his life: discriminated against.
