In just short aphorisms, this classic work of Indian philosophy spells out succinctly how the mind works, and how it is possible to use the mind to attain liberation. Compiled in the second or third century CE, the Yoga-Sutra is a road map of human consciousness--and a particularly helpful guide to the mind states one encounters in meditation, yoga, and other spiritual practices.
It expresses the truths of the human condition with great eloquence: how we know what we know, why we suffer, and how we can discover the way out of suffering. Chip Hartranft's fresh translation and extensive, lucid commentary bring the text beautifully to life.
He also provides useful auxiliary materials, including an afterword on the legacy of the Yoga-Sutra and its relevance for us today. Read more Read less.

Verified Purchase. This is the translation of the sutras I've been looking for! It has peasant, flowery commentaries on SOME of the sutras and zero an many others. But while reading Satchidananda, I always got the impression that this all must make some sense, but I'm surely not getting it out of this book. Contrary to other reviewers, I found Hartranft's commentaries wonderfully understandable.
Any reviewer who found Hartranft difficult hasn't read anything by Iyengar, whom I find impenetrable. Hartranft explains in the Introduction what the sutras are all about something no other translation I've ever come across has done , and then reinforces those fundamentals as her translates and comments, finding logical groupings of sutras. Spoiler alert: There IS an overarching meaning to the sutras! I honestly thought this book was terrible!
I had to read it for my yoga teacher training but found myself reading each paragraph 2 or 3 times and still didn't understand any of it! The only parts that seemed simple were the sections on the yamas and niyamas and that was because I'd just read The Yamas and Niyamas by Deborah Adele which I'd highly recommend if you're a beginner looking for something easy to understand.
This books seems more suited to scholars and professors of Sanskrit. Unless you're already an advanced level student of the yoga sutras I would save the money and try reading something else. White has many surprising findings that contradict many of the assumptions that have been made of this text since Swami Vivekananda revived the Yoga Sutras and brought it to the West.
One of the most important revelations is that the book might actually originally have had a Buddhist orientation. A significant number of modern scholars think commentator Vyasa revised it specifically to make it more palatable to Hindus, and may even have written the fourth and last section himself. Especially noteworthy is that the Isvara of Patanjali is not a Creator God or a god of divine intervention, but closely resembles "Buddha nature" of Mayahana Buddhism.
That suggests that the critics here complaining of the author's Buddhist interpretations are quite wrong. If you are a serious student, pick up D. White's book, which is better in Kindle format, then read or reread Hartranft. I bought this book because it is one of my reads for my hr yoga teacher training.
It was very interesting and philosophical. I found it somewhat difficult to read Very insightful. I found it somewhat difficult to read as I am new to the terminology but the inserted English references were helpful. Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands.
