By nomasi , May 19, in GPS. Does anyone know of a site where there are detailed instructions on how to use the Magellan exPlorist GC?
I referred to the user manual but it was of minimal help. As an example,I can access the compass but it does not seem to work. Is there some sort of an on and off button for the compass? Also, when trying to enter coordinates specifically the seconds I cannot enter three digits only two.
The manual does not address this problem. I am utterly frustrated so am looking for some site that can help me. Yes, it's a horrible flaw. Maybe it's designed to challenge you more during your geocaching units. You'll get used to it though. A workaround is to use your compass overlayed on top of the map screen, which will reveal even more of a mess, like not being to see the red arrow at all and blocking up your map screen. You can barely even see the red arrow to follow.
To change it to the geocaching system of DD MM. This unit does not have an electronic compass the and higher units do. Because of this you need to be moving in order for the compass to determine what direction is north, or which direction you wish the red arrow to point. Standing still or creeping along doesn't get it as it calculates north by the changes provided by your movement in conjunction with the satellite signals.
That is probably why the manual does not address it. MM copied and pasted from the manual. Apparently you are concerned that it will only accept two decimal digits to the right of the decimal whereas the geocaching. Don't let it concern you. Many GPSr units yet in use utilize only two decimals, also. That distance will increase marginally the closer one is to the equator, decrease marginally closer to the pole s. By having it only DD MM.
Trust me, change what I said to change in this thread and you're GPS will be pretty accurate and you will be able to record the coordinates accurately. I use the map screen with the compass when I get close to the cache, but only display two data fields.
I use the sun icon on the ring to orient the GPS. The problem is that bottom of the compass ring is under the data fields it doesn't matter if there are two or four which frequently covers up the sun icon.
And I agree that the little red arrow is very hard to see. Magellan should call the ring a "Direction Indicator", not a Compass, as there is no actual compass in the GC.
