Solid textbook! Really interesting subject. The text basically covers the major theories of motivation as you would expect. The text is organized around the biological, emotional, individual and social perspectives. Very useful. Particularly in regards to understanding and treating substance use. View 2 comments. May 02, Marina rated it it was amazing Shelves: own. Great book if you're studying the subject :.
Hated this book. It was course material for my psych subject, and this textbook made the subject difficult and boring. No pictures, no colour, no chapter review, no questions. Just the same text page after page after page. Oct 10, Jasmin Martin rated it liked it. Two of my favourite subjects in psychology. This book is very interesting and a companion book when studying motivation, learning and emotion. Feb 11, Stacey rated it it was ok Shelves: former-text-books. Not the exiting book.
I wasn't so motivated to read it. Oh, and it has no pictures. View 1 comment. This is one of my primary sources for my action research study on motivation in education. I read this book, parts of it, upon the recommendation of a friend pursuing a doctorate in education. After talking to my friend about my motivation research study, he suggested two books based on my lighter motivation reading interests, including Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.
Where Drive just touches the surface on the psychological needs of motivation, this book goes much deeper. A This is one of my primary sources for my action research study on motivation in education. As the author often references self-determination theory, naturally, that was the next book I read. Still, this has helped me a lot as I move through my own understanding of motivation. It's not a quick read, but appears to be a thorough, general basis to psychology.
The depth of the chapters is amazing. Only after reading 'Chapter 5 Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation' do I have the idea I'm actually starting to understand it. I've read about it before in multiple books, but only here it clicked. Autonomy, Competence and Relatedness. The explicit link with flow and structure was a connection I had not made. This chapter made clear that mere interactions don't satisfy this need, but there needs to be perception of mutual caring about the other's needs.
And the link with the internalization of values was very insightful, implicitly pointing back to the closer-to-intrinsic regulation styles.
Sep 19, Alf Mikael Constantinou rated it it was amazing. I read this book out of the desire to boost my own motivation in studying. Judge this review by the fact that I'm a complete novice in psychology, or specifically positive psychology in this case. That being said, the book seems to do everything: explain concepts though some in this field don't have very good definitions , dispel myths, show criticism of the theories presented, exemplify how you can use this knowledge in your own life and relationships.
All in all it seems like it's all you cou I read this book out of the desire to boost my own motivation in studying. All in all it seems like it's all you could want in a textbook about the topic at hand. Even though I'm left wanting more practical insight into how exactly to apply it to my day to day, this has a been great start.
Naturally, it's already scheduled for a re-read. Apr 11, Sara rated it it was ok. It was the assigned book for a class I taught on motivation to undergraduates and was very much not at a useful level for them. Understanding Motivation and Emotion, 7th Edition
Understanding Motivation and Emotion , 6th Edition helps readers understand motivation; where it comes from, how and why it changes over time, and how motivation can be increased. The book also shows how to apply the principles of motivation in applied settings, such as in schools, in the workplace, on the athletic field, in counseling, and in one's own personal life. Reeve's engaging writing captures the excitement of recent advances in the field to show the reader what contemporary motivation psychologists are excited about. He also uses effective examples and explains how motivation study can be applied to readers' daily lives.
